UTM Architecture Students Won Autodesk Malaysia Design Competition

JOHOR BAHRU, 20 February: CONGRATULATIONS!!!! UTM Architecture students have done it again!

In less than three months, as if the recent winning in the UAC Building Manufacture of Malaysia competition is not enough, UTM architecture students have once again made UTM proud. They have won another national competition, the AUTODESK MALAYSIA DESIGN COMPETITION 2011.

Besides grabbing the 1^st, 3^rd and two consolation prizes in the whiz and open categories, with additional two consolation prizes in the engineering categories, UTM students have indeed monopolized the awards.

The fourth and final year students have bagged lots of cash prizes home after being handed in more than RM5000.00 in total for their winning entries. Roughly, there were RM100,000 worth of cash and prizes have been offered, making the “ Autodesk competition offering the biggest incentives for students and lecturers in

the country” – said Prof Dr Mohd Hamdan Ahmad, the Executive Director of Institute Sultan Iskandar, who is also the chairman for the Secretariat of Autodesk Malaysia Design Competition 2011.

The AUTODESK MALAYSIA DESIGN COMPETITION 2011 was opened to Public Higher Institution in Malaysia such as Government Universities, Community Colleges and Polytechnics and recognized by MOHE, MQA and JPA. The use of Autodesk® software products is mandatory.

The design were judged based on the professional and skilful used of the software integrating several criteria including creativity and originality of design, green building and design principles that are consistent with the three selected themes, a) Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC): b) Manufacturing and Product (MID): and c) Media and Entertainment (M&E).

YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, Minister of Higher Education of Malaysia officiated and presented the respective awards in the prize giving ceremony, which was held on 14thFeb at Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Shah Alam. Also present was Dr Abu Hasan Ismail, the CEO of Prestariang Systems Sdn Bhd, whose company has actively involved and co-sponsored the event.

A total of twenty-oneinstitutions have participated and eight hundred participants of lecturers and students from higher institutions, officers from the Ministry of Higher Education and several corporate members from the industries attended the event. By far, it has been a successful event, proudly commented by Prof Hamdan.

Topping the cherry on the cake on that Valentine’s day, UTM has also doubled shined itself when pronounced the institution with the most winning entries making it the highest institutional winner. UTM has beaten all twenty-one other higher institutions contenders such as Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), polytechnics and college communities.

Without a doubt, our architecture school shines – stands itself out, remains the best in country. Way to go Jabatan Senibina, Hooray!!

Pelajar UTM menang Anugerah Rekabentuk Pelajar Senibina 2011

Pelajar yang memenangi pertandingan bergambar bersama hadiah masing-masing.

JOHOR BAHRU: Pelajar tahun akhir senibina, Fakulti Alam Bina, Tan Choon Wah memenangi Anugerah Rekabentuk Pelajar Senibina 2011 (ASDA 2011) anjuran UAC Berhad, 2 Disember lalu.

Beliau memenangi hadiah bagi Kategori B untuk pelajar tahun lima dengan membawa pulang hadiah wang tunai RM2,000 menewaskan Lee Jian Zhou daripada Universiti Lim Kok Wing dan Muhammad Taufik Abdul Wahab dari Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

Hasil rekabentuk pelajar diadili berdasarkan kepada beberapa kriteria antaranya kreativiti dan keaslian rekabentuk, prinsip bangunan hijau dan rekabentuk yang selaras dengan tema. Pertandingan itu disertai oleh pelajar dari Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) dan Univesiti Lim Kok Wing.

Hasil lukisan senibina peserta dinilai oleh panel hakim profesional yang terdiri daripada pemaju Mutiara Damansara Dato’ Ghazali Mohd. Ali, arkitek ternama daripada MAA Arkitek Sdn. Bhd,Tuan Hj. Ar. Sharuddin Md. Yunos, Ar Dr. Tan Loke Mun dari ArchiCentre Sdn. Bhd dan Ar. David Tan dari Harley Consult.

Hadiah telah disampaikan oleh Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif merangkap Pengarah Urusan UAC Koo Hock Fee.

Konvensyen Antarabangsa Bugis Diaspora

Hasrat Pusat Kajian Alam Bina Dunia Melayu (KALAM) untuk memperkenalkan dan mengumpulkan kajian-kajian tentang suku Bugis telah tercapai melalui Konvensyen Antarabangsa Diaspora Bugis yang diadakan buat pertama kalinya pada 25 – 26 November 2011 yang lalu. Sebanyak 24 kertas kerja telah dihantar untuk membincangkan perihal sejarah, budaya dan senibina Bugis yang telah terdiaspora berabad-abad lamanya.

Konvensyen yang menyediakan acara seminar, gerai, pameran dan majlis makan malam yang berlandaskan Bugis ini telah berjaya mengumpulkan lebih daripada 500 orang. Mereka ini datang daripada pelbagai daerah terutamanya persatuan-persatuan Bugis seperti Persatuan Bugis Johor, Persatuan Perpaduan Rumpun Bugis Melayu Malaysia, Tawau Sabah, Persatuan Komuniti Bugis Sabah, Persatuan Kebajikan Bugis Sabah, Persatuan Pelajar Indonesia yang berasal daripada Sulawesi Selatan, para akademik dan pengkaji-pengkaji sejarah serta orang-orang perseorangan yang berminat terhadap tajuk konvensyen ini.

Academic Internship at Hiroshima University

Two master candidates, Sara Izrar Aziz and Nurzuliza Jamirsah, from Green Innovation Research Group at Faculty of Faculty Environment were awarded with a grant to attend three months academic internship at Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation in Hiroshima University. The internship begins on 1 January and ends on 31 March 2012. At Hiroshima University, the candidates will be supervised by Dr Tetsu Kubota to continue their research work and to write manuscript for journal submission. Their expanses to attend the program are jointly supported by Hiroshima University for RM10,000 and by UTM for RM8000 per person.

Konvensyen Antarabangsa Bugis Diaspora

KALAM dengan sukacitanya ingin menjemput semua pakar, pihak akademik, professional, organisasi dan individu dari pelbagai bidang untuk bersama‐sama berkumpul di Konvensyen Antarabangsa Diaspora Bugis untuk perbincangan, perkongsian dan perdebatan tentang ‘Bugis’.
Bugis merupakan salah satu etnik yang amat berpengaruh dalam dunia Melayu. Etnik ini telahpun tersebar diseluruh rantau Melayu dan kepulauan Pasifik sejak abad ke 15.

The significance of Bugis Heritage would be their extraordinary ability to survive through the centuries amidst its geographical fragmentation and adapt to diversified local socio culture.

Keistimewaan keturunan Bugis mungkin adalah daya ketahanan yang tinggi untuk kekal wujud setelah berabad‐abad walaupun berlaku perpecahan dari segi geografi dan juga penyesuaian kepada sosiobudaya kawasan tempatan.

Bugis migrants assimilated with existing locals’ elites in their adopted homes, which led to social revolution in Malay proto‐states hierarchy of major kingdoms around South East Asian and Asia Pacific islands countries.

Orang Bugis yang berhijrah telah membina hubungan dengan golongan elit di kawasan penempatan mereka dan perkara ini membawa revolusi sosial dalam hirarki negeri‐negeri Melayu terawal dalam kerajaan‐kerajaan berpengaruh di serata Asia Tenggara dan Kepulauan Asia Pasifik.

Maintaining the Charm of Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU: Old and new elements and features must co-exist and complement each other under the multi-billion ringgit Johor Baru city centre transformation project.

University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Dean, Faculty of Built Environment, Prof Dr Ahmad Nazri Muhamad Ludin said redevelopment did not mean the old has to make way for the new.

“But the most important thing is that the project is able to bring back the crowd to Johor Baru again and make it a vibrant city,’’ he said.

Ahmad Nazri said the opening of the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex at Bukit Chagar here in 2008, was the main reason why the city centre was now ‘deserted’.

Prior to the opening of the CIQ, motorists and visitors especially Singaporeans would stop over in the city centre to change money and patronise eateries but the traffic had now been diverted to Jalan Tebrau and Stulang Laut.

He also said the parties involved in the transformation project must include the conservation of pre-war houses and heritage buildings in old parts of the city centre.

“These buildings are windows of the past and tells the rich history of Johor Baru and how the city has transformed into what it is today,’’ said Ahmad Nazri.

Malaysian Institute of Architects deputy president Saifuddin Ahmad said Johor Baru city must have its own uniqueness which could not be found in other Malaysia cities or towns.

He hoped the stakeholders would conserve heritage buildings or old buildings with historical value under the transformation plan.

“Development and redevelopment does not mean we have the liberty of pulling down old or historical buildings and replacing them with modern skyscrapers,’’ said Saifuddin.

He said old and heritage buildings could be turned into income generated products with new usage such as turning them into boutique hotels, specialty retail and food and beverage shops.

Johor will unveil the project this year to rejuvenate and redevelop the city centre in line with its status as one of the five flagship development zones in Iskandar Malaysia.

The RM1.8bil project includes RM200mil to open and clean up Sungai Segget, one of the filthiest rivers in the country, which flows along Jalan Wong Ah Fook in the city.

Several years ago, RM6mil was spent to cover up a stretch of the river, which has the reputation for being a dumping ground for raw sewage, into a pedestrian walkway.

The redevelopment project covers 485.62ha area within the Johor Baru city central area including Bukit Timbalan, Sungai Segget, the former site of the Lumba Kuda low-cost flats, Bukit Chagar CIQ and Tanjung Puteri Lorry Customs Complex.

Johor Baru has humble beginnings as a small Malay fishing village, originally known as Tanjung Puteri and was founded in 1855 by Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim, the father or Sultan Abu Bakar.

Sultan Abu Bakar, famously known as the “Father of Modern Johor” changed the name to Johor Baru after he moved the seat of government from Teluk Blangah in Singapore to Johor in 1866.

During his reign (1862-1895), Johor Baru was one of the “most modern and developed towns” in the Malay states due to the large presence of British and Chinese traders.

400 Penuntut 'terangi' Johor Bahru

JOHOR BAHRU 21 Jun - Lebih 400 penuntut daripada 21 institusi pengajian tinggi (IPT) awam dan swasta seluruh negara menyertai Bengkel Seni Bina Ke-23 anjuran Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) di sini, baru-baru ini.

Bengkel tahunan dikenali sebagai 'Terang' dengan kerjasama Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB) dan Pihak Berkuasa Wilayah Pembangunan Iskandar (IRDA) itu diadakan bagi menjayakan projek mahasiswa tahun akhir jurusan seni bina.

Pengarah Projek, Teh Boon Soon berkata, pelbagai aktiviti termasuk mengenali tempat menarik di negeri ini disediakan sekali gus membolehkan peserta terlibat mampu membina kreativiti dalam usaha melahirkan lapisan arkitek berkualiti.

"Antara program ialah pameran lukisan hasil karya pelajar IPT iaitu 20 lukisan menggunakan cat minyak dan air dipamerkan di Laman Tun Sri Lanang dan 20 arca di Plaza Seni Jalan Wong Ah Fook," katanya.

Beliau berkata, peserta turut dibawa mengunjungi Bangunan Sultan Ibrahim di Bukit Timbalan di sini bagi menjejaki laluan bersejarah yang menjadi mercu tanda pelbagai pembangunan di negeri ini.

Selain menyelesaikan tugasan berkumpulan dengan menjejaki 11 hentian yang dimulakan di Bukit Timbalan menyusuri Jalan Dhoby, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Persiaran Tun Sri Lanang, Legaran Segget, Balai Polis Lama, Persiaran Meldrum, Stesen Keretapi Lama, City Square dan berakhir di Plaza Seni.

Seorang penuntut Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur yang berasal dari Kedah, Tan Jun Hong, 19, mengakui teruja kerana dapat mengenali lebih ramai rakan daripada IPT lain.

"Saya juga kagum dengan pelbagai rekaan seni bina beberapa bangunan lama di negeri ini sekali gus ia memberi pengalaman menarik," katanya.

Pendapat sama turut disuarakan dua penuntut Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Selamah Pazalo Rahman, 19, dan Nurhafizah Mohd., 20, yang gembira kerana berpeluang bertukar-tukar pandangan dengan rakan-rakan lain.

Malah, mereka yang merupakan sahabat baik juga teruja menjayakan pelbagai aktiviti yang diaturkan sepanjang program tersebut selain berpeluang menimba pengalaman baru.

"Kami sangat gembira kerana berpeluang menyertai program ini. Ini kali pertama kami mengikuti aktiviti yang melibatkan penuntut jurusan sama melibatkan pelbagai IPT dan ia memberi pengalaman menarik," katanya.

Terang! XXIII Architectural Workshop

‘Terang’ is the theme given to xxiii Annual Architectural Workshop 2011 host by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai. This is one of most anticipated event in the academia of architecture in Malaysia and the region. Overall about 600 participants are expected from 22 institutions in Malaysia and the region. The Architectural Workshop has grown as an event that encourage exchange of ideas and knowledge, expression of opinions in various issues among participants, strengthening ties between the various architecture student communities and opportunities to interact with various parties that are involved in the architectural profession.

A common criticism is that universities have been regarded as detached from the community. They always claimed the world, not its host city, as its domain. This has sparked an idea to highlight the theme Terang! as a symbol of hope to re-enlighten the soul of Johor Bahru, one of the most successful empire in its region during early 16th century. The 23 Architectural Workshop tries to bridge this gap by organizing series of community participation activities in the Historical Johor Bahru city center. It may be a small step taken, but participants will be exposed to organize activities to the public, involving the public as partners of their creative ideas and making them to understand the importance of community participation in design activities.

General Lecture Sustainable Development

On 27th May 2011, Dr Hisyam Rasidi and Dr Ismail Said delivered two lectures at Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sriwijaya, Palembang in Indonesia. Dr Hisyam explained on Sustainable Development: A Lesson from Science City and Dr Ismail talked on Placeness and Placelessness in Urban Context: An Overview on Urban Sustainability.The audience include academics and undergraduates from Department of Architecture. Apart from sharing knowledge with academics and students from Sriwijaya, the talks generate networking between Sriwijaya and UTM including the opportunity to conduct joint studio project; Landscape Urban Design studio for the coming semester.

An Environmental Change for Felda Tenggaroh 1

Recently, a group of 27 second year landscape architecture students from Faculty of Built Environment, UTM have conducted a study and produced a comprehensive Landscape Master Plan proposal for FELDA Tenggaroh 1 in Mersing, Johor. This community service is for the benefit of local community towards improving their environmental wellbeing. As for the students, they are compelled to do so by the school as part of academic requirements, in lieu of SBL 2046: Landscape Community Design Studio.

This program is deliberately planned to connect servicing the community different environmental context with started learning outcomes: “to practice analytical skills and criticism in real landscape community through establishing enquiry by design; understand and apply an aspect of landscape planning and design, addressing an ecological , sustainable and livable community planning approaches.”

On the 29th of April 2011, the Department of Landscape Architecture will be having the semester's design portfolio day. A total of 165 students from Year 1 to Year 4 will present their drawings at their respective studios or at the Exhibition Hall in Block B03, Faculty of Built Environment. The project themes for the studios are as follow:

UTM Rangkul Tiga Anugerah

SERAMAI 34 mahasiswa Sarjana Muda Ukur Bahan dan Sarjana Muda Sains Pembinaan, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru menyertai persidangan tahunan "International Surveying Conference for Undergraduates", kelolaan Universiti Sains Malaysia, berlangsung di Thailand, baru-baru ini.

Persidangan tahunan anjuran bersama The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS, UK) dan Pertubuhan Juruukur Malaysia (ISM) itu bertujuan memperkukuhkan jaringan pelajar di rantai Asia.

Program bertemakan “Surveyors of the Future: The Challanges of Change” diharap menjadi pemangkin kepada usaha meningkatkan interaksi dan bertukar hasil penyelidikan dan pengalaman peserta.

Antara universiti yang menghantar penyertaan ialah Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Taylor’s, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Hong Kong), Chongqing University (China), Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China), Assumption University of Thailand dan Thammasat University (Thailand).

Sebanyak 18 kertas kerja dibentangkan pada lima sidang selari. Lima kertas kerja disampaikan wakil industri iaitu daripada Sr Datuk Mani Usilappan (RICS), Professor Mike Riley (Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom (UK)), Professor Roger Flanagan (University of Reading, UK), Sr Ahmad Suhaimi Abdul Majid (RICS) and Sr Dr Adi Irfan Che Ani (ISM).

Pada persidangan kali ini, UTM diwakili empat pelajar tahun akhir Sarjana Muda Ukur Bahan iaitu: Chong Yaw Fatt, Nur Farah Farhana Rasid, Tan Choon Boon dan Joanna Tay Yuan Ju.

Masing-masing membentangkan kertas kerja hasil projek penyelidikan prasiswazah mereka. UTM memenangi tiga daripada lima anugerah “Anugerah Pembentang Terbaik”.
Joanna diumumkan sebagai pemenang “Special Mention Paper Award” dengan kertas kerja bertajuk “Anticipating Issues Concerning Disputes in Statuotary Adjudication under Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act (CIPAA) in Malaysia”.

A group of four docents and 34 undergraduates from Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) made an inbound visit to Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment from 5th to 6th March 2011. ALAM 2010: GATHERING OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURAL STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA

On 13th until 17th of December 2010, Universiti Putra Malaysia has organized the annual Assembly of Landscape Architecture Students Malaysia which known as ALAM 2010. This program was held to gather all landscape students from all over Malaysia including the community college students. ALAM 2010 is the fourth assembly after ALAM was organized by Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia in 2007, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2008, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Perak in 2009. ALAM is one of the educational and social programs for landscape students from various local universities allowing students and academics to gather and discuss on landscape architectural issues. It also affords students to establish friendship and networking.

2010 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: IFLA APR CULTURAL LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE IDENTITY OF TRADITIONAL ASIAN LANDSCAPES

On 14 to 17 December 2010, a group of five staff from Department of Landscape Architecture attended IFLA Symposium on Cultural Landscape organized by the Seoul National University, South Korea. The theme of the symposium was Identity of Traditional Asian Landscapes that enabled academics from Asian universities to share viewpoints on cultural landscape issues and its meaning. Dr.Hamidah Ahmad, Dr. Sirima Nasongkhla, Dr. Sapura Mohamad and Assoc. Prof. Dr Ismail Said, presented their paper at the IFLA Symposium. In addition, landscape architect Mohd Za’i Kandar fromTropics Design and tutor, Lee Yoke Lai joined the symposium group.

Participatory research with children and young people has increased dramatically in the last 15-20 years. Previously, children’s research largely consisted of research on children rather than withthem as is common today. This change reflected a new respect for, and understanding of, childhood as a distinct social period in its own right and not simply a step along the way to adulthood. Researchers became interested in understanding this period of life from children’s perspectives, recognising that they themselves would always be outsiders as adults.
