NRGF Asia Scoping Workshop, 9-10 December 2016, Bangkok, Thailand

The Centre for Innovative Planning and Development (CiPD), Faculty of Built Environment (FAB), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor Bahru, was commissioned by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to lead a “Nature Resource Governance Framework (NRGF) Asia Scoping Work” project at a cost of USD20,000.00 (RM88,000.00). Publicity and Public Participation, Draft District Local Plan (RTD) Johor Bahru and Kulai 2025 (Replacement) by TPr. Chew Lee Ting

Madam TPr. Chew Lee Ting, an urban planning officer at Johor Bahru Tengah Municipal Council (MPJBT), gave a talk cum briefing on the necessity and significance of the Publicity and Public Participation of the Draft District Local Plan (RTD) Johor Bahru and Kulai 2015 (Replacement). In her briefing, TPr. Lee Ting emphasised the importance of the Draft RTD and stressed the need for the public to participate in the publicity program. The Draft RTD has outlined  the use of all land and buildings in the administrative area of MPJBT untill 2025. It is envisaged that the plan will have an impact on where one lives, work, shop and play, and how one moves around the city. It is further expected that the property values in MPJBT will also change based on the intended use of land and buildings. TPr. Greenovation Reaches School Community to Educate Children on Interactive Artworks – Irfan Suria

Under attentive supervision of Assoc. Prof Dr. Ismail Said and Dr Mohd Hisyam Rasidi together with Dr. Nadiah N. Sahimi, my recent data collection for my research work entitled “Children’s Artworks for a Child-Friendly Environment” would not be possible without the assistance of other Greenovation Research Group members whom are Joharudin Samion, Mega Suria Hashim, Amalina SsMfauzi , Noraini Bahari, Janatun Yusof, Nanna Zabar, Zakie Zabar, Putri Fariza and Megat Mohamed Arif. In order to collect such data from middle childhood children, a series of workshops aptly named “Seni Bersama” was conducted from September to November 2016 at Sekolah Taman Bukit Indah, Johor Bahru. Department of Urban and Regional Planning Community Social Responsibility Activities

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment, UTM Johor Bahru, under the Management and Governance Course have organized a number of mini Community Social Responsibility (CSR) activities within the month of November, 2016. The idea of having a mini CSR is to provide the opportunity for each student to have more hands-on management of an activity and face-face interaction with the community. The mini CSR activities targeted varied groups of the community giving each group different experience to later share them in class presentations. Altogether four groups were formed with between 6-7 members per group. The targeted communities are Kampung Sungai Melayu, Nusajaya; the Johor Down Syndrome Association; the Shan De Welfare Association, Johor Bahru; and the Pertubuhan Kebajikan Insan Istimewa, Johor. A team of five UTM students studying in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment won the Makoto Shin Watanabe Award, which was a special jury award from the Chief Juror at the 11th International Symposium on Architectural Interchanges in Asia (ISAIA) on 20-23 September 2016. Third project, Home-garden – SBEL1404

On 7th November 2016, 41 SBEL1404 students did their inventory at six residences in Bandar Dato Onn, Taman Mutiara Rini 2 dan Taman Pulai Perdana. This is third project, Home-garden, of studio Basic Landscape Design. It was their first project dealing with real clients, the home owners. Project Home Garden

On 27 October 2016, 41 students from SBEL1404 visited the garden of Puan Mega Suria Hashim at Setia Tropika Residence. This field visit is part of precedent study on a project HOME GARDEN. The tropical outlook of the garden is composed of a variety of flowering trees, shrubs and climbers. Accent feature is a cluster of lotus in a large urn positioned beside the living room of Mega's residence. The gate is crafted with stainless steel with distinctive Monstera leaf motif. 2nd Asia Pacific Environment-Landscape Architecture Forum

Four PhD students from Greenovation Research Group and one undergraduate from Department of Landscape Architecture presented their papers at 2nd Asia Pacific Environment-Landscape Architecture Forum at Seoul National University from 17 to 19 October 2016. The theme of the forum was Present and Future of Asia Pacific Landscape Architecture. A total of 57 papers were presented from 12 nations throughout the Asia-Pacific Region and South Asia. The students were accompanied by Dr Ismail Said whom was an executive member of the forum. Accommodation, food and excursion for the participants were fully funded by the organizers, Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture and Seoul National University.  More photos...

Two FBE researchers won two medals at Industrial Art and Technology Exhibition (INATEX) 2016 held from 4 th   October till 6 th   October 2016 in UTM, Skudai, Johor Bahru Malaysia. Dr. Richard Sliuzas, an Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning and Geo-Information Management, University of Twente The Netherlands, gave an enlightening talk at the JPBW Monthly Seminar on 26 th   September 2016. Associate Professor Dr. Richard Sliuzas graduated from University of South Australia (formerly SAIT) in 1979. He completed a Post-graduate Diploma and MSc in Urban Survey and Human Settlements Analysis at the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) in 1980 and 1988 respectively. Tongji University, Si Ping Campus Three students from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) participated in a Sustainable Urban and Rural Development Workshop at Tongji University, Shanghai from the 3 rd  till the 11 th  of August 2016. The students were Tan Pei Yee (1SBEP), Nur Nadzirah Binti Roswandi (2SBEP) and Mohd Aizuddeen Bin Mohammad Meseztor (3SBEP) and accompanied by Dr. Gobi Krishna A/L Sinniah from the department. A total of 35 students with diverse academic background from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Korea and Malaysia participated in the workshop. Prof Amran Hamzah elected as an IUCN Regional Councilor

Heartiest CONGRATULATIONS to  Prof Amran Hamzah  who has been elected as an  IUCN Regional Councilor  during The World Conservation Congress that was held in Hawaii from 1 to 10 September.  There were more than 10,000 registered participants at the congress that ended with elections by about 1,300 members representing government agencies and non-governmental organisations to elect the President, Treasurer, 6 Commission Chairs and 28 Regional Councilors (5 from Asia). Nominations for the various positions started around nine months ago involving a rigorous process and Prof Amran,  the outgoing  Co-Chair of the Theme on Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities, Equity and Protected Areas (TILCEPA), was the only candidate from Southeast Asia. Prof. Amran is now one of the 28 Regional Councilors elected for the 4-year term from 2016 to 2020 and the first Malaysian to be elected. With his election, Prof. Amran will become a member of the IUCN Council, which is the principal governing bo
